A Fishing Guide to Kentucky's Major Lakes

Authors: Arthur B. Lander and Art Lander
Average review score:

This book is an excellent source of information.
This book is an excellent source of information for anyone who fishes the waters of the bluegrass state. You will find yourself returning to it again and again as reference. It is doubtful if anyone has more knowledge about the lakes in Kentucky than Mr. Lander

Fitcher's Brides
Published in Hardcover by Tor Books (01 December, 2002)
Author: Gregory Frost
Average review score:

Yet another grand re-visioning of a classic fairy tale.
Terri Windling's Fairy Tale Series never disappoints. Author Frost here creates a vivid and accurate, if bleakly creepy milieu for his take on Bluebeard. The millennial fervor of mid-19th century America is fascinating in itself and Frost elucidates as he entertains. His characterizations are apt, although I was at first discomifited by his descriptions of the sexual de-flowering of his three protagonists; eventually, it all fits and is entirely appropriate. The story of Bluebeard has always been an ugly for me and it's no less so in this re-telling. Some very engaging and aptly retro prose.

Flowers of Emerald Lake
I Read this book from start to finish in one sitting !! Turning every page faster and faster to see what was going to happen next. Living in Hillsboro myself I was very engrossed in the story as I recognized places and things that were mentioned. Leroy is a very likable old fellow that captures the readers imagination from the start Nancy used just the right amount of the fear factor that makes you grip your seat and bite your nails while keeping you ready for the next event to take place. A great read.... and great work Nancy!!!!!

Fort Center: An Archaeological Site in the Lake Okeechobee Basin (Ripley P. Bullen Series)
Published in Paperback by University Press of Florida (December, 1997)
Authors: William H. Sears, Elsie O'R. Sears, and Karl T. Steinen
Average review score:

Great example of how to report an archaeological site
Fort Center, near Lake Okeechobee Florida, is one of the most fascinating archaeological sites in America. The Indians who lived there built mounds and gigantic circles of dirt, may have been the first in America to cultivate maize, and participated in a mortuary cult.

This book chronicles the excavation of the site and discusses the finds.

Appropriately illustrated, this book is a model of how archaeological research should be reported.

The Fourth Coast: Exploring the Great Lakes Coastline from the St. Lawrence Seaway to the Boundary Waters of Minnesota
Published in Paperback by Penguin USA (Paper) (March, 1995)
Author: Mary Blocksma
Average review score:

A wonderful road trip, with adventure and painless learning.
Reading Fourth Coast was like taking the trip, with anticipation for every new day and experience Ms. Blocksma related. I learned a lot and eagerly anticipated each daily adventure. When the trip was over, I put down my book and cried, so sorry I was to have it end. Read it.

Freshwater Mussels of Texas
Published in Paperback by Texas Parks & Wildlife Dept (October, 1996)
Authors: Robert G. Howells, Raymond W. Neck, and Harold D. Murray
Average review score:

Most comprehensive resource on freshwater mussels in Texas
Bob Howells is "The Mussel Guy" for Texas. This book, co-written with Raymond Neck and Harold Murray, is the most comprehensive publication on the status of freshwater mussels in Texas. This is a valuable resource for aquatic ecologists interested in mussels, which are a conservation concern due to declining abundance across the state. This guide presents species accounts with black-and-white photographs on each species present in Texas. Descriptions, geographic distributions, and ecological information is included. Introductory material covers everything from mussel anatomy and behavior to collecting gear and commercial uses. The guide is indexed and fully referenced. Several pages of color plates in the appendix are a nice extra. No self-respecting student of Texas mussels should be without it!

From the Cockpit of the Rubaiyat
Published in Paperback by Archer Books (2001)
Author: Donald P. Rothschild
Average review score:

Sailing as a metaphor for life
This book is about life. Most of it takes place on a sailboat (actually, several sailboats). It is not about sailing, although there is alot of sailing and misadventures about sailing in the book. If you have ever been sailing, ever owned a sailboat, or ever wanted to, you will enjoy this book. It is a very easy read. It is light hearted literature and the author is very honest about his sailing experiences (actually quite alot as a merchant marine officer in WWII, to recreational sailing in the Chesapeak and Narragansett Bays).

From Where We Stand: Recovering a Sense of Place
Published in Hardcover by Knopf (May, 1993)
Author: Deborah Tall
Average review score:

Known Where We Stand, Then We Know Where We Are
My understanding and practice of landscaping is limited to the home and garden variety. Even at this level of home maintenance my skills and interests are limited. And I should be vacationing at a national park, say, the Grand Canyon or Yosemite, I would be as Moses standing on Pisgah taking in the general effect of the scenery from a distance. It comes as an entirely new revelation then, for one to be connected to or be part of a landscape takes more than Scott's fertilizers for the lawn, bordered fences, or sightseeing the Yosemite Valley.

After accepting a teaching position at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, the author and her poet husband make their home in the Finger Lakes Region at upstate New York. There, the author begins her interrogative journey on this vast landscape of terra incognita and eventually finding herself (and does her family) to belong to the land(scape) and not merely as a transient trampling through it with indifference.

The book is repleted with historical anecdotes, myths, and local interests. It's is not a technical tome about geography, history, and anthropology of the Finger Lakes. Rather, this is the author's journal of how she strives to be with the land upon she dwells. As the author discovers, the landscape is the embodied lessons of the past for the present, and instructions for the future. The scenery of a place is only a prop. Without a landscape there can be no scenery. And that what makes this book rare and instructive.

Deborah Hall's work has filled a void in my understanding of our culture. I now think more about the history, the town, and the neigbhorood (including neighbors) where I live. Perhaps too, I will come to know the land where I stand, and not just my own lawn.
